Chelsea FC has struck a lucrative sponsorship deal worth £20m per year with WhaleFin, a Singapore-based digital assets platform owned by Amber Group. Though Chelsea remains restricted in its commercial operations due to government sanctions, this strike has breached the company’s otherwise stringent parameters. WhaleFin’s logo will replace the current sleeve sponsor, Hyundai, on the Chelsea shirt, marking Chelsea’s first foray into the cryptocurrency arena. The deal comes just weeks after Liverpool’s link to a cryptocurrency group to replace Standard Chartered as its sponsor. Manchester United had previously struck such a deal with blockchain group Tezos, making Chelsea’s WhaleFin partnership no longer the Premier League’s first crypto deal. The rapid increase in deployment of crypto platform sponsorship deals is due to its budding popularity as a growing sector of global finance.
