Buying Bitcoin: A High-Risk Proposition

The Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) has issued regular warnings about the high-risk nature of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin. Cryptocurrencies lack intrinsic value and are not protected by regulatory schemes, so investors should be prepared to lose all their money.

How to Buy Bitcoin in the UK

UK investors looking to buy Bitcoin can either use a trusted exchange or broker and add funds to their account, place an order, and ensure they have a safe storage option to prevent theft or hacking. Alternatively, investors can gain indirect exposure to Bitcoins through investing in cryptocurrency-connected businesses or crypto exchange-traded funds.

Understanding Bitcoin’s Volatility: A Risky Investment

In recent years, Bitcoin has hit record-high prices and experienced extreme volatility, making it inherently risky. Its value is determined by supply and demand, and losing trust in its use as a means of payment could lead to a plummet in its value. In May 2021, Elon Musk’s announcement that Tesla would stop accepting Bitcoin led to a 17% drop in its price.

The cryptocurrency market has experienced a significant drop in recent times, with Bitcoin, Ethereum, and other altcoins plummeting by at least 60% in 2022. Crypto exchanges such as Coinbase and Gemini have reported hiring freezes and layoffs as a result of the poor performance. The market contraction has prompted industry leaders to describe the current situation as ‘crypto winter.’ Investors should take heed of this warning and exercise caution when considering new investments or evaluating their current portfolio. The market may continue to struggle due to wider macroeconomic and geopolitical events, as well as high inflation and rising interest rates in the US. While there is the potential for a revival in the future, investors should be prepared for an extended period of contraction and volatility.

Bitcoin’s price is highly volatile and can be influenced by several factors. These include supply, demand, competition and sentiment, among others. According to experts, the total amount of Bitcoin that will ever be available is capped at 21,000,000, which means supply is limited. In the medium term, Bitcoin will not be in short supply due to a fixed slow rate of minting new Bitcoins which will take decades to reach the 21,000,000 limit. However, the halving mechanism effectively puts a constraint on supply that could push up prices if demand increases. With 11 months to go until the next Bitcoin halving, prices could slowly increase.

On the demand side, growing demand for a finite resource like Bitcoin should increase its value. The greater the demand for Bitcoin, the more transactions there will be. Transaction numbers have shown a strong upwards trend since April, setting a new record last week. This could reflect an increase in demand that could push prices up.

Regarding competition, Bitcoin still retains its title as the King of cryptocurrencies, with no major pressure on competition to change this. Finally, Bitcoin prices can be affected by people’s attitudes towards it. Sentiment indicators like the Crypto Fear & Greed Index, and the levels of Bitcoin outflow from crypto exchanges can give a good indication of sentiment. Sentiment might indicate that prices are about to increase. Overall, investing in Bitcoin can be a risky and highly volatile investment, and the FCA has warned repeatedly that anyone investing in crypto should be prepared to lose everything. Therefore, before investing in Bitcoin, it is essential to conduct proper research and consult with a financial expert.
